While we have not seen the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in the works, we do know that this chip will power the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9. Having that said we are already getting word regarding another chip that will be coming out this year, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850. While little is known about the chip we know for sure that it will be coming out before the end of the year.
We also know that this is one of the processors that will power the upcoming Windows always-connected PCs and that these upcoming devices will feature 5G connectivity, something that we have yet to test. The name Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 comes from the X50 modem which is capable of 5G networking.
AT&T recently confirmed that the company will be releasing 5G services before the end of the year and that is one way of knowing for sure about the upcoming tech. While this might not be a clear indication of what is coming up.
While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 with the X50 modem is too big for smartphones right now and there are no 5G capable devices as of right now, this chip would be great for laptops as it would be great for power efficiency which translates to better battery life and more time before you need to plug in the laptop.
This could be an attempt of hitting Intel where it hurts and with AMD already giving Intel a tough time and all the issues that the company is already facing with Meltdown and Spectre you can totally see what kind of pressure these upcoming chips will put on the competition. Intel alone is not the one at risk here, AMD is back after some time and this is a threat to AMD Ryzen Mobile as well.
The upcoming APUs have a very low cost and are incredibly powerful for the price, while the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 will not be as powerful, it could be cheaper and if the consumer wants the cheaper option and not the more powerful one then the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 powered Windows always-connected PCs would be great options to consider.
